Charles H. Spurgeon, instructing a group of seminary students on sermon delivery, said, “When you speak of heaven, let your face light up with a heavenly gleam. Let your eyes shine with reflected glory. And when you speak of hell–well, then your usual face will do.”

The reading of the Word of God in public worship is part of the authority of the church. This authority belongs rightfully to those who have been called to the offices of minister & elder. This is why the Scripture always tells us that men who had been ordained were the ones who read the Scriptures in the corporate assembly. Look at Ezra, Moses, Timothy. They all were invested with the authority of God as shepherds in the church. They took upon themselves the duty of executing that office by reading the word when the people of God assembled for worship.
One of the things I love about Providence Church is how engaged with the messages they always are.
Case in point, one of our members asked this after last weeks message on Adam and Eve's fall. I mentioned that A & E "were naked and knew no shame." The question was posed, "So, in your last sermon, were you saying there was no sexual desire before the Fall?" This was my response... Let me clarify. There was no perversion in their sexual desire. Adam was most definitely attracted to Eve, as his song clearly demonstrates. However, his desire was without sinfully selfish intent. As I mentioned in the sermon, we cannot even begin to imagine what this is like. Our nature is so sullied with sin that we cannot even read that sentence without a perverted thought. Adam and Eve though did not know such perversion or lust. Their love and attraction was entirely pure. The class which shall dazzle us with their eloquence. [The following is the press release I submitted to the TG. I’m putting it here as an invitation to you all to come and join us for the evening.] For immediate release: Students Clash in Debate Thursday December 8 at 6:30 pm at Ashland Brethren in Christ Church Minds and voices will come to a head on Thursday, clashing in a battle of opinions and eloquence. For the last 10 weeks seven homeschool children have been learning the techniques of public speaking. Under the tutelage of Matt Timmons, a pastor and homeschool father, the class has discussed and presented various speeches, including informative, persuasive and emotive speeches. All their training will now be put on open display as they enter into a public debate. Students have been paired off with an opponent and given a topic to research. They will attempt put their opponent to shame by winning their audience with the techniques discussed in class. Timmons said that the class has done exceptionally well, demonstrating radical improvement with each passing speech. "This debate should be interesting," said Timmons. "Due to the odd number of students, I have to debate one of them. As well, there are some great personalities here. I wouldn't be surprised if some of the speeches get a little spirited."
